2 Aira Force

One of Lakeland’s most beautiful waterfalls is located in Gowbarrow Park. The park was enclosed as a deer park in the Middle Ages, and was then landscaped in the late 18th Century; this included the building of a hunting lodge and the stone bridges around the waterfalls. Rising above Aira Force is Gowbarrow Fell which gives some of the best views across Ullswater.

Take path at north end of carpark leading east up through woodland for about ¼ mile, to a gate onto open hillside. A clear path leads up-hill for about 2 miles to summit of Helvellyn. For the best views, turn off this path to the right and follow the edge of the crags for the last ¼ mile. Please note, the path is steep and rough in places, and is dangerous in bad weather and winter conditions.
