At 5 miles long, Coniston Water is the fifth-largest of the lakes. It is perhaps best-known for Donald Campbell, art critic John Ruskin and Swallows and Amazons Arthur Ransome. Ruskin’s home at Brantwood on the east side of the lake is worth a visit, and easily reached via a short trip on the  Victorian steam yacht, Gondola affording wonderful views of the lake and fells.
