Poet William Wordsworth (1770–1850), lived at Dove Cottage for just eight years (from 1799 to 1808), quite a short period of a long life, but it was here that he wrote much of his famous poetry, including I Wandered Lonely as a Cloud.

Parking is limited at Dove Cottage itself, so use the Stocks Lane car park, which is situated on the road into Grasmere from the roundabout on the A591. If full, there are more car parks in the village itself. Turn left out of the car park and walk back to the roundabout. Cross over the road and bear right. Dove Cottage is situated up the lane on the left, behind the Wordsworth Museum.

Walk north-west along Easdale Road for about ½ mile. Where road turns right do not take path across river, but continue on road and across a field for about ¼ mile, to a group of cottages. Bear right through the cottages and through a gate to reach the foot of Helm Crag. Starting just to the right, a clear path climbs the side of Helm Crag for almost 1 mile, all the way to the summit. Steep and rough in places.

Walk along small lane opposite church for about 1 mile, then take path on left down to the lakeshore path; turn right to the foot of the lake, about 1 mile. Do not cross the footbridge but take the higher path slanting up-hill to the right. This path reaches a junction after about ¼ mile; turn sharp right onto Loughrigg Terrace for views over Grasmere.
