25 Buttermere and Haystacks

Haystacks has become one of the most popular fells in the area. This is partly due to Alfred Wainwright, author of the famous seven-volume Pictorial Guide to the Lakeland Fells who declared Haystacks as ‘the best fell-top of all’. His ashes were scattered nearby at his request.

26 Buttermere and Crummock Water

Two of the Lake District’s most picturesque lakes. Buttermere village is situated in-between the two. The walk around Buttermere lake is one of the best in the National Park, and one of the best-loved. Crummock Water is more than twice the size of Buttermere, but rather overlooked in comparison with its more popular neighbour; this is a pity as the scenery is still very impressive here.

Take path across the road from carpark, passing farm buildings on left. Follow path across fields, heading south-west for about ¼ mile, across a bridge and through a gate. From gate, head up-hill to the right for about 100 yards, then turn left, slanting up-hill for about 1 mile to Scarth Gap. At Scarth Gap turn left up a very steep path for about ¼ mile onto the summit of Haystacks.
