8 The Langdales

Bow Fell and the Langdale Pikes from Lingmoor Fell © Alex Black

Although the Langdale Pikes are Langdale’s most famous mountains, they are far from being its highest. The main valley, Great Langdale, stretches for over 6 miles. Running alongside is the quieter, more secluded Little Langdale.

Walk north along the lane towards Bleatarn Cottage, about ¼ mile.  Just before reaching the cottage turn right up a path beside a stream; steep and rough in places.  After about ¾ mile, cross a wall at a stile, and follow wall up to left to summit of Lingmoor Fell.  For the best views of the Langdale Pikes follow the wall/fence and path NW for almost ½ mile.

11 Slater Bridge, Little Langdale

The name of this little packhorse bridge probably comes from the slate miners who would have crossed the bridge to the caverns on the south side of the valley.

Follow the lane north-west then north-east for ¼ mile, continuing north-east along a track through woodland for about 1 ½ miles to arrive at a river with a footbridge. Do not cross the footbridge but turn left along a track for almost ½ mile, then go through a gate on the right to Slater Bridge.
